How to Start a U.S. UNESCO Club
Why Become a U.S. UNESCO Club
The Associations and Clubs were born of individual initiative: from the beginning to the present day, they have been set up in answer to a widespread feeling among their members of the need to participate more actively in international life, in harmony with UNESCO’s approach and within its fields of competence. Their activities are directed towards the ideals set forth in the Preamble to the UNESCO Constitution.
We can summarize the aims of Associations and Clubs for UNESCO as follows: Foster the interest of the broader public in UNESCO’s mission, programs and activities; contribute to developing and promoting an understanding of UNESCO’s goals and advocacy, including at grassroots level.
Associations and clubs also promote and implement the organizations programs at national and local levels, in coordination with the National Commission for UNESCO; promote the values of solidarity, tolerance and respect for cultural diversity, as well as the values of global citizenship education, human rights and sustainable development among peoples; promote the International days, weeks, years and decades proclaimed by UNESCO; and contribute to promoting UNESCO’s messages by translating UNESCO Secretariat-generated documents and information into national and local languages.
Associations and Clubs for UNESCO can operate in any sphere of UNESCO’s competence. However, it is important that their goals and activities are inspired by UNESCO’s current strategic objectives and programmatic priorities.

Become a U.S. UNESCO Association or Club:
A great way to get involved with UNESCO is to start a UNESCO Club, Center or Association. It begins with a group of like-minded people who desire to promote international understanding and to involve themselves in the programs and activities of UNESCO. Both new and existing organizations are welcome to apply.
K-12 U.S. UNESCO Club:
School Clubs may be initiated by students or faculty members. In either case, the school administration is required to nominate a faculty member to act throughout the school year as the school UNESCO Club Advisor. Students wanting to establish a new club in a school are required to follow school guidelines for creating clubs and also apply with the United States Federation of UNESCO Clubs, Centers and Associations (USFUCA). The USFUCA will provide assistance and guidance throughout the application process. Once a school UNESCO Club Advisor is assigned to the club, the first order of business is to develop a process to appoint officers and the executive committee members among the students. The leadership of the School UNESCO Club is then required to submit its application within 30 days using the online application found here. Each Semester, the club is advised to send an electronic copy of their activities to the USFUCA.
University or College U.S. UNESCO Club:
